Welcome back! It’s been a strange, difficult, and frightening couple of years for all of us, and we’re still not out of the woods. Luckily, we’ve still got books. Read on for updates and a sneak peek of the new content I’ve been developing for fall 2021!
As you may know, I’m a bookseller. The pandemic has changed what that means for me. I’m part of a small team that handles online order fulfillment at my bookstore. During the height of the pandemic, we processed more orders in one week than we had in all of 2019. I’ve never worked longer or harder hours in my life. I went from spending most of my time on the sales floor to spending all day working at a computer, carrying tall stacks of books to the pick-up desk, or packing up shipment. All of my personal pursuits, including this blog, were put on hold due to intense burnout. I’m only just beginning to recover my energy and my creativity — right in time for the next holiday season, of course.
Because I am no longer interacting face-to-face with readers every day, I have been looking at other ways to share my book reviews and to stay connected to the book community, especially now that I have taken a big step back from social media. To that end, I am finally reviving this blog!
In September, I’m launching two new review series: New Release Highlight, which showcases a new release every Tuesday, and Test of Time, a bi-monthly retrospective on classic science-fiction and fantasy. Each series will focus on a mix of books for teens and adults. The first installment is currently queued for September 21st and will run through October 22nd.
If this trial run is successful, I am hoping to add Backlist Highlight, which will feature older titles. My plan for this series is to focus on titles from the past two years that didn’t get the attention they deserved because of the pandemic. Ideally, these would be weekly posts, but it depends on how much time and bandwidth I have as we move into the 2021 holiday rush.
Below is a sneak peek at some of the graphics I’ve made for these series. If you’d like to receive an email when this blog is next updated, you can subscribe below. Thank you for your support!
